Retention or Recruiting Problem?
Is your organization's turnover sending you on a search for retention ideas? Before you implement those retention strategies, step back and take a close look at your turnover trends.
If you're finding that a good percentage of turnover occurs in the first year of employment, it's a pretty good bet that the problem lies in the recruiting, rather than the retention process.
Here are ten questions to consider:
Have you correctly identified the competencies needed for success on the job?
Are you rating candidates against the success factors?
Are your recruitment efforts targeting the right sources?
Are your interviews standardized?
Are your interviewers well-trained?
Do you provide realistic job previewing?
Are direct supervisors involved in the process?
Do you thoroughly check references?
If you use testing, is it validated?
Does the entire process have a sense of urgency and timeliness?
Taking time to improve the recruiting process just may pay handsome retention dividends.
